Unsung hero: Dedication to the most precious moments in life

Inspiring: A strong faith led Christina Taylor to become a nurse and being cared for at Kingston Hospital made her want to work there
Presiding over life’s most special memories, Christina Taylor has been bringing babies into the world for more than 30 years.
In her career as a midwife at Kingston Hospital, Mrs Taylor has delivered several hundred babies so far. She said: “Each one is special, that is the most important thing.
“My favourite part of the job is relating with the women and families, and I especially enjoy helping them to meet their baby.”
Taking care of pregnant women from when they register their pregnancy, until up to 28 days after birth, Mrs Taylor is involved in keeping things normal during childbirth and identifying medical emergencies.
She said: “Most importantly my job involves helping mums and dads to bond with their baby.”
The married mother-of-four from Ashtead, was called to the vocation by her strong Christian faith.
Mrs Taylor said: “I always wanted to be a nurse. Part of my faith is caring for other people.”
Having been born at Kingston Hospital herself, and having had all her children delivered there, Mrs Taylor has been greatly inspired by the hospital staff.
She said: “The people that delivered my children were my colleagues. They taught me a lot.”
Mrs Taylor, who is a marathon runner in her free time, works in the postnatal ward and often out in the community.
She said: “We have to maintain a balance between excellent care and paperwork. The paperwork is the part I least enjoy, as I’m sure most midwives would say.
“It is a great privilege to be allowed to share in the birth of someone’s baby.
“The women are generous. They take a stranger into their family for a little while, and the biggest thing I can offer them is to be with them.
“There is no typical day. Being a midwife is unpredictable, I never know what is going to happen.”
