News Shopper readers split on arming police after officers' deaths in Manchester - have your say

Should all police carry weapons after two policewomen were killed in the line of duty?
WITH the funeral of a second policewoman killed in a gun and grenade attack in Greater Manchester taking place today, News Shopper readers are divided on whether police should be armed in future.
Constables Fiona Bone, 32, and Nicola Hughes, 23, died together in the line of duty after being lured to their deaths when they responded to a reported burglary at a house on September 18.
A News Shopper website poll asked the following question: In light of the fatal shooting of two policewomen in Manchester, do you think it is time for officers in the UK to be routinely armed when on patrol?
There were more than 500 votes, with 51 per cent (280) saying police should be armed and 49 per cent (270) saying no.
What do you think? Would arming police officers improve their safety or make their jobs even more dangerous? Would the public be safer if police officers carried guns? Add your comments below.

Take the Tomlinson case for example. ( im not defending any actions) but that was just a shove. imagine if he had pointed a gun and the bullet went through and hit someone else.
In the met we are meant to make a note purely for taking our baton out of its holder never mind racking it. I can't even begin to think what it would be for upholstering a gun. The rest of the world has guns and had them for years here it would be an unnecessary expense. Risk. Danger..
look at the questions that were asked about kettling protesters. You will struggle to find any sensible copper that wants a gun as part of normal duty.
All I see is the potential risk to my freedom because I would be questioned about the whys and when's using it.
it's reassuring to see the question asked. And especially the support shown from the public for the girls in Manchester. It hasn't gone unnoticed by us. Thanks
But keep the guns ta

We need to show that we have a zero tolerance towards criminals.
