WITH the funeral of a second policewoman killed in a gun and grenade attack in Greater Manchester taking place today, News Shopper readers are divided on whether police should be armed in future.
Constables Fiona Bone, 32, and Nicola Hughes, 23, died together in the line of duty after being lured to their deaths when they responded to a reported burglary at a house on September 18.
A News Shopper website poll asked the following question: In light of the fatal shooting of two policewomen in Manchester, do you think it is time for officers in the UK to be routinely armed when on patrol?
There were more than 500 votes, with 51 per cent (280) saying police should be armed and 49 per cent (270) saying no.
What do you think? Would arming police officers improve their safety or make their jobs even more dangerous? Would the public be safer if police officers carried guns? Add your comments below.
