CHARLTON Athletic's chairman Michael Slater has complained to UEFA after claiming he was knocked unconscious by Spanish police before Manchester City's match with Real Madrid last month.

Mr Slater had been in the Spanish capital to watch the big Champions League match when the incident happened.

The chairman, in place at the Valley since December 2010, was left with minor head injuries and severe bruising in what he claims was an unprovoked attack before kick-off.

Following the game, City fans reported they had been attacked with batons and received heavy-handed treatment from the Spanish authorities, with several videos surfacing online.

Mr Slater said in a statement: "I can confirm that I was assaulted by at least one police officer in Spain without any provocation at all.

"I have been in contact with the FA, and I am expecting them to take the matter up formally with UEFA."

Watch the incident in the video below. Caution: The video contains swearing.
