Orpington residents struck by allergic reaction to paint

A GROUP of Orpington residents claim they have been left with swollen faces and breathing difficulties after having their front doors freshly painted.

Three households in Amherst Close say they have suffered a severe allergic reaction since workmen painted their doors and drainpipes black on September 12.

The angry mob are now demanding answers from their housing provider A2Dominion, who commissioned the new paint job.

Stuart Cowling, who has two daughters Kylah aged four and eight-month-old Kizzy, is trying to discover who is responsible.

The 30-year-old said "My face has gone up like a balloon, my four-year-old can’t breathe properly and the neighbour’s face is constantly itchy.

"We have all got something wrong with us so it has to be the paint. No one has apologised to us."

Mr Cowling lives apart from the mother of his daughters but travels every day from Swanley to see his family.

Neighbour Natalie Wood, 38, and Mr Cowling were rushed to hospital after they fell ill and their symptoms worsened.

Ms Wood moved out of her home temporarily to avoid the paint but returned last week when her reaction subsided.

But according to neighbour Tyiana Casaraghi, who remained on the street, Ms Wood was forced to flee again after "literally five minutes" when her face flared up again.

Ms Casaraghi, 44, says her own symptoms are like a "band of burning" across her eyes.

The stable-owner said: "My eyes run so badly that one morning I woke up at six."

Ms Casaraghi says she, too, has had problems breathing and her face is really painful.

She told News Shopper: "I have cold flannels across my face. It is really sore and tender, it is just horrific.

"It has to be the paint because that is the only common factor we have all got."

A2Dominion says it has no evidence to confirm the paint has caused the reaction but has sent paint samples to Dulux.

Group director of property services, David Lingeman, said:  "We can confirm two residents in Amherst Close, Orpington, have contacted us about the paint used to decorate their front doors.

"Once we receive the findings from Dulux we will update our residents.

"In the meantime, if any residents in Amherst Close would like to discuss this further with us, we would urge them to get in touch as soon as possible."

According to Dulux, contractors have stopped working on the street while they conduct investigations into what they describe as an "unprecedented" situation.

Dulux spokeswoman, Elizabeth Bickham, said: "We need to verify the product, check on what has been applied, be assured it is ours, and begin a full laboratory test on samples that we have requested from A2Dominion.

"This is unprecedented.

To our knowledge we have not experienced multiple complaints in this area, and will work with the individual contractors and those living in Amherst Close to do whatever we can to resolve this matter."

Is this the first time that paint has been used (anywhere)???

But surely if it is an external surface that's been painted the fumes would be blown away

She owns a stable, but rents her house

And I would have thought a stable owner needed to get up early

How can she be a council tenant when Bromley sold all their housing stock in 1992 ?

The clues is in "... their housing provider A2Dominion..."

Bromley has no Council tenants.

This is St Mary Cray and trust me there are loads of council tenants! If you're sitting there breathing in the fumes all day then yes you might see some side effects. Unfortunately I don't have the time to sit at home paint sniffing. I'm in the office for 10 hours a day

Whilst Bromley Council, like most, sold their housing some years ago (I believe the term is "outsourced") the people still go to the council for housing, the council provide this through A2Dominion, Broomleigh or whatever they are called today

Essentially they have council houses

Why are they exposing themselves and their baby to potential danger by posing for the photos close to the ALLEDGED source?

It doesn't matter where people live. Only one in 8 'help with rent' claimants do not work (government official figures) so don't tar everyone with the same brush. I remember this before with internal paint causing bad smells and skin reactions, its not something you should just gloss over otherwise any inquiry will be another whitewash,.

Bromley didn't outsource they SOLD their houses to housing associations.

Anyone going to the Council for housing will be told "nothing to do with us" and will be pointed to local HAs. Check Bromley's website under "Housing"

Bromley don't provide anything towards housing other than 3 website links to local HAs

They dont have council houses, end of story.
