School bike scheme nominated for national award
A SCHEME tackling antisocial behaviour on school journeys through offering bikes from Bromley police property stores is now award-nominated.
Project Schoolbike was launched in 2011 to address problems on the bus routes serving Charles Darwin School, in Jail Lane, Biggin Hill.
Unclaimed, unmarked and disowned bicycles from Bromley police property store were repaired to a roadworthy condition.
The council also organised training, bike marking and provided full safety equipment.
Driver incident reports fell around 90 per cent from 284 in 2007 to 28 last year.
Project Schoolbike is now up for the 2012 Tilley Awards which recognise innovative crime fighting projects created by police, community groups and the public.
Seventy applications have been whittled down to 11 and it is now up to the public to decide the winner.
Minister of state for crime prevention Jeremy Browne said: "The Tilley Awards are recognised across the world for highlighting the very best of British crime fighting and this year is no exception.
"I would encourage anyone to view the excellent projects on the Tilley Awards shortlist and select their favourite."
Charles Darwin School deputy head Rob Jones said: "Project Schoolbike has been brilliant - we have 30 pupils using the bikes every day which means 30 fewer pupils on public transport.
"They are enjoying using the bikes and it's been really good for the school."
Projects entering into the Tilley Awards were expected to provide at least seven months’ data to demonstrate their impact on the problems they were solving.
