PEOPLE in Bexley are being encouraged to bin the opportunity for burglars to get into their homes.

Detective Chief Inspector Gary Holmes said: "An opportunist burglar looks for the tell-tale signs no one is home and the easy way in.

"Bin days are just one example. When the bins are emptied they often remain near the front gate. A bin is just like a ladder to a burglar.

"Talk with your neighbours and arrange to help each other by putting emptied bins back."

Officers are also reminding residents to always use the key to lock windows and doors when going out - even for a short while - to lock burglars out.

Good advice particularly as Christmas is coming up. Opportunist galore. Don't be a victim.
