Plans: David Wood with last year's blue print to change Beckenham
BROMLEY Council has made a bid for £1.68m in funding to improve Beckenham High Street.
Last week, the council's bid was delivered to Transport for London as part of a lengthy application process to improve the public space.
Improvements will include - if the bid is successful - enhanced crossings, widened pavements and new and improved street lighting.
David Wood, Beckenham Civic Society chairman, said: “We do not want to miss out on various issues which are being proposed to improve the high street.
“The proposals that are being put into TfL are at the first proposal stage so we have a long way to go.”
Mr Wood points to the issue of lorries at Beckenham junction, which he hopes will be eradicated if the town wins funding.
“The money must deal with the huge lorries at Beckenham junction. They often block all the traffic and some of those huge lorries charge down the high street if they can get a straight run,” he said.
Parking and loading provision for visitors and businesses would also be improved with Beckenham, according to the council, trying to put “an emphasis on the village identity”.
Councillor for renewal and recreation Peter Morgan said: "This is an exciting time for Beckenham town centre and we have worked hard on this bid.
“Beckenham has a thriving community and if developed, this scheme will support the future economic vibrancy of the centre and enhance its historic heritage.”
The project to revive Beckenham’s town centre will cost a projected total of £2.5m.
Bromley Council will discover if it has been accepted through to the next stage in late November.

I see cameras are now monitoring traffic at the War Memorial roundabout. Could the greatly reduced width of the High Street at that point has something to do with all the congestion there? Who'd have thought reducing 2 lanes in each direction to 1 would cause congestion???!!! Answers on a postcard to the Bromley Lodge of the Guild of Master Traffic Engineers,... lol

Where a couple of months back, it was hard to find somewhere to park...
It is now impossible.
I am sure that the various branches of "the usual suspects" are really pleased...
...so pleased that they will soon be moving on.

I remembered that a couple of years previously, there had been some major utility work carried out in Beckenham, can't remember whether it was water or gas.
Anyway, some bright spark thought that the best way to inconvenience road users would be to create a one way system around central Beckenham, using the High Street and Rectory Road. The result was a load of parallel parking in the High Street, no traffic lights, and a load of people hopping in and out of the shops and cafes...
...you know, like a large village/small town should look.
It only lasted a couple of weeks.
So there you have it...
... a couple of cans of white paint, a couple of thousand pounds for some new road signs, and a new vibrant Beckenham.
Oh, can I have the rest of the £2.2 mill for solving the problem?
No?
Perhaps there is a different agenda?

I would strongly advise David Wood and Peter Morgan to have a look at Orpington to see the realities and workmanship of these expensive vanity projects.
Ask if it will last 2 years. Ask if it falls apart in less than 2 years it just gets bodged up. Ask if will be the same quality, or better, than Orpington. Ask if it will congest traffic like Orpington. Ask if it reduces parking like Orpington.
Learn from the painful and expensive mistakes made there.

All the expensive raised sections were substandard and have had dollops of tarmac sloshed over them to fill the holes.
The flowery words used to describe the forthcoming carnage in Beckenham are very similar to what they said for Orpington.
Vibrant it aint - waste of £2.2m it is.
How about a visit to the crossing near the Walnuts and some photos please NS?
