A PORTUGUESE man who stabbed his neighbour to death has been cleared of murder after claiming he acted in self-defence.

Andre Ribeiro, 21, denied murdering father-of-one Frederick Moore on December 8 last year, in Bynon Avenue, Bexleyheath.

During the trial at the Old Bailey, jurors were told Mr Moore, a 36-year-old Irishman known as Paddy, had been staying at his girlfriend's house in Bynon Avenue - opposite the bedsit where the defendant was staying with friends.

Mr Ribeiro and Mr Moore, who had a friend staying at the bedsit, came across each other in the communal kitchen and began arguing.

Mr Moore returned to the bedsit with a group of friends who were armed and a fight broke out.

Mr Ribeiro, who stabbed Mr Moore twice in the chest and back, claims he acted in self-defence when Mr Moore hit him over the head with a steering lock.

On Friday (September 14) jurors found Mr Ribeiro not guilty of murder and he was discharged.
