Human remains found on Tooting Bec Common believed to be baby born in past fortnight
Human remains found on a common in Wandsworth on Monday are now believed to be of a baby born within the past fortnight.
A post mortem examination yesterday confirmed that the legs discovered by a council contractor on Tooting Bec Common belong to a white baby.
But the examination was unable to confirm either the gender or the cause of death and further searches of the area are continuing in the hope of finding further evidence.
Police issued an appeal for information last night asking for help from nurses and doctors who may be able to help with identification.
A spokesman said: " The remains are thought to be those of a newborn baby born in the last two weeks.
“We have serious concerns for the mother, or parents, of this child and would urge them to come forward and speak to police or seek medical aid.
“We would also like to appeal to those that work in the medical or caring professions who may information about the possible identity of the mother or child.
Searches are continuing in the area for further remains.”
Detectives from the Homicide and Serious Crime Command are investigating led by Detective Chief Inspector Mark Dunne.
