Owners horror after pregnant cat shot twice with air rifle
5:30am Monday 10th September 2012 in News By Lauren May, Chief Reporter
An owner has spoken of her horror after her pregnant pedigree cat was shot twice by a high powered air rifle.
One year old Amber was five weeks pregnant when she was shot in both hind legs on Wednesday, September 5, in Malvern Close, Mitcham between 2 and 5.30pm.
Her owner, Bronwen Smewing, who lives in Malvern Close said: "Luckily she made it home and I was able to get her to our local vet where she had to remain overnight as the risk of aborting the cubs was high due to the extreme shock and stress this caused."
The vet confirmed she had been shot with two air rifle pellets but was unable to remove them as doing so would be too dangerous for her unborn cubs.
The rare Savannah breed cat is descended from the African serval, bred with a Siamese, and is extremely rare having only been recognised by the International Cat Association in 2001.
Mrs Smewing said: "I have no idea who would be so cruel but would like other local residents around our area to be aware that there is someone who clearly takes pleasure in causing pain and suffering to animals, it's normally a small step from animals to humans."
Anyone with information should call Merton police on contact police on 101 or Merton CID on 020 8649 3118

trasie, just because this breed is rare and beautiful (not more so than other breeds, thank you) does not mean they will go to safe homes or have a safe place in life. they could go to a very loving, caring person and still be hurt at the hands of others, just as this mother cat was. why make more animals when there are plenty in need of good homes *right now*?

I also understand what you are saying(re rare breeds) but i dont support that view, when said cat is only a year old! they are suseptible to pymera cancers & other dangerous conditions. Also with a law passed last year. ALL breeders be it 1 litter or 20!!!! must now declare all monies earned to the inland revenue. At the end of the day it all comes down to MONEY
No offence bodon prifiz, but this appears to be a very rare breed of cat so I would imagine that the kittens would have homes to go to already. I for one think this is a beautiful animal so I would imagine that all the kittens will have a home, and not be send them to rescue centres.

great to hear cat is going to be ok, & hope thugs who done this will be soon caught, but! as beautiful as this cat is please please always spey/neuter. not fair on the cats health & too many rescue cats looking for homes, are PTS because rescue centres are full
She was due to be speyed when we found out she was pregnant again - certainly not deliberate, all the kittens had homes to go to, it was only being pregnant that saved her life. She was actually shot 3 times and the third pellet that should have killed her shattered her uterus and killed the babies - she is currently at the vets having undergone surgery to remove the babies, bullets and spey her. All my pets are rescues - I AM NOT NOT A BREEDER.

Thank you for your kind comment, she is indeed very rare and beautiful, all the kittens had homes and I was not 'charging' for them. I just wanted her to be speyed and healthy, we had tried to keep her in and away from un-neutered Toms, as she was still feeding her first kitten - but she got out and we found out only last Saturday she was pregnant again. The kittens saved her life, the third bullet shattered her uterus and had she not been pregnant with her swollen 'belly' she would have been killed - the point of this story is to try and find out who did this and alert other pet owners in the area. I have both dogs and cats and all apart from one are rescue animals, I donate to 2 different animal charities each month

i am really, really sad to hear a cat was shot (again!) but she should have been spayed a.s.a.p. why would this woman want to bring more animals into a world where there is such little respect for them? because she is a breeder, wants to make some money and therefore has very little respect for the animals herself. i've had it with breeders! every excuse in the world to make some dosh.

I would love to know how emelem managed to come to the conclusion that the owner was a breeder who just wants to make money from reading this article. If she was only in it for the money would she give a monkeys or care enough to contact the press. Er no of course not.
