WOOLWICH'S role in the Olympics is to have a permanent memorial if plans for a piece of public art go ahead.
The Royal Artillery Barracks has provided the backdrop to shooting events at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, with a temporary structure built on the common.
Now three brightly coloured crater-like objects which are currently on the venue buildings, are set to be given a permanent home on a grass verge at the current site.
All three would be arranged horizontally on the ground to commemorate each of the three main shooting structures from the temporary venue.
Under plans submitted by the Olympic Development Authority, they would be built on land near Ha Ha Road which is owned by the Ministry of Defence.
If approved by a planning committee, the artwork could be in place by next March.
