Pensioners who defrauded Greenwich Council for Racial Equality of £47k avoid jail

Makhan Bajwa Makhan Bajwa

TWO pensioners who defrauded a charity they worked for of more than £47,000 avoided jail today.

Greenwich Council for Racial Equality treasurer Hardev Singh Dhillon and former director Makhan Bajwa previously pleaded guilty to conspiracy to defraud the race relations charity.

Dhillon, 76, of Woolwich, and Bajwa, 67, of Erith, were given a suspended sentence as well as a curfew and ordered to pay £7,000 costs each at Woolwich Crown Court today.

Judge Stephen Dawson sentenced them to 12 months in prison suspended for two years and ordered them to pay £1,000 costs each, plus £6,000 compensation for investigation costs.

Dhillon and Bajwa were also given a 150-day curfew order where they must remain within their houses between 8pm to 6am.

The judge appears to have been very lenient with them. Having said that, in mu opinion, the sentence for HSD was a fair one.

Could not help buy laugh out loud hard re the CURFEW between 8pm and 6 a.m for the both of them - LOL

Thieves deserve harsh sentences and they are both very lucky to avoid gaol, although of course if they are found guilty of further offences in the next 2 years then they will have to serve their sentences.

They must both live with the fact that their actions have brought shame upon themselves and their families.

Rightfully there will be no hiding place for these men who abused their positions as upstanding members of the community.

I think a couple of hundred hours of community service would have been more appropriate than the curfew order.

So they are not allowed out of their house's to STEAL between 8.00pm and 6.00am, big deal. I can remember people getting put inside for non-payment of the poll tax and it was nowhere near the amount that these two have stolen. There is no mention that they have to pay this money back.

Was anyone at the court hearing and anything to add?

Hello Virtual-Monster & Greenhouse man

The sentences are weak, just like the judicial system.

Don't worry, the Streets of Greenwich and Bexley will be much safer between 8pm and 6am as they two have a 150 day curfew, LoL, laugh out very loud.

I agree that at the very least a very large community sentence would have been good.

like you, I have heard of people that were put inside for poll tax evasion.

What I fail to comprehend is the fact that both these blokes had the top two jobs at the now defunked GCRE. The fraud must have been ongoing for hell knows how long. Both were in a position of trust. They conspired to defraud the charity, yes a charity. Sadly, the sentence they got has made, will make many unhappy.

TBH, Mr Dhillon got a fair sentence when you take his age into account and he is quiet a decent bloke, bar this episode, lol.

The Ex Director of the now de-funked GCRE got away with it lightly, IMO

We can all mistakes but defrauding a charity, lowest of the low.

For what it's worth, the suspended sentence of 12 months for 24 months, I certain that they won't do anything like this again - hope that helps,

About time these tax funded Orgs were closed down; they are basically gravy train for spivs and fraudsters = free hand to operate under cover of scream "Racism" if investigated = there are not many tax funded Orgs operating freely now without some form of accountability......

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks they should also pay back the money they stole! Funny no mention of what they spent it on.
Sentence is a joke at they were stealing for a longer period than the sentencing.

I think they did repay the money they stole. Old bill needs to check these thieving are souls banks accounts going back over as many years as they can though. You can bet your life this wasn't just an isolated incident.
Seize their assets, no good scum.

Hello Concerned

I read poss here that they had paid back the money before the sentencing as this usually results a a very lenient sentence, as is the evidence here.

Do you think they would have paid it back if not caught out? LOL

"No mention where they spent it." The 47k is not a lot of money when divided by two, especially when you have a big detached house on a premier road and a jag with private reg - I'm going by by an earlier story here that posted pic of Bajwas house and Jag.

The sentence is a "joke," i agree.

Hiya

As they have repaid and the case was only for the 47k, the courts can't "seize their assets."

It is important never to forget that people lost their job/livelihood because of the fraud and subsequent closure of the GCRE. Also important to remember that victims in minorities communities will not have any support.

Let us all hope that the Newshopper will tell us exactly what had happened and what people think of them, especially those that lost their jobs because of them.

Thinking about the curfew between 8pm and 6am for 15, still makes me really LOL, Rarely do you get pensioners on a curfew.

The harm has been done, people have lost a great service that was run by honest and dedicated staff apart from these two and the local community that may have needed GCRE's help are stuffed.

Many thanks for that! I apologise for forgetting to mention the services you have mentioned

Fair enough.

Sadly, this is the end of the case, and the police and the council have done what they could do. I'm 100% certain there won't be anything new being highlighted and case is closed.

Some people are saying it's a lot more, I can only go by court and press reports and have to stick to the 47k It was a very, very complex case, and a colossal breach of trust by the two men involved in the conspiracy to defraud the charity.

If you are right, good luck

these two greedy men were on very good salaries paid for by british tax payers, they were not happy with this they then stole from the charity who provided them a easy job and big salary they really are two bits of dirt!

...i've just googled 'the wall's' 'tanner' and it's a little imperial coin!! - probably in the days of black and white t.v. when erastus blogged having seen 'les dennis' on telly then!! - 'les' would have had to have been about eleven years of age as a stand-up comic then!! let's all rofl!! together!! seriously though... is it not time these outdated race groups were closed down ? these two tricksters and cheats show something is not right within these organisations... all you need is a good lawyer - not a monster organisation costing hard pressed tax-payers a fortune for these people to be sitting dahn twiddling their thumbs... we are in times of austerity in the u.k. - we simply cannot afford these gravy-train organisations who do nothing!!
