It was not an easy decision but we hope that printing images such as these will encourage people to report any incidents of animal cruelty to the relevant authorities immediately.

TRAPPED in a squalid cage all day every day, German Shepherd Jack starved to death inch-deep in his own excrement.

One of his owners, 25-year-old Paul James Brunsden was jailed for 20 weeks and banned from ever keeping an animal again at Dartford Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday (August 1).

Jack’s co-owner – Stacey Louise Lockhurst - was warned she faced a similar fate.

Judge Michael Kelly said it was “one of the worst cases of animal cruelty I have ever come across.”

He added: “This dog was effectively tortured and neglected.”

Brunsden, formerly of Neptune Terrace in Erith but now living in Hornchurch, and 27-year-old Lockhurst both pleaded guilty to two charges of causing unnecessary suffering to the black and tan dog.

One charge was for not addressing the fact the pet was underweight and another for keeping it in a small, squalid cage.

RSPCA inspectors visited Lockhurst’s home in Forest Road, Erith, in October 2010 when Jack was 16 weeks old.

They recommended a plastic box he was kept in was taken away and gave the pair – who jointly owned the dog – advice on training. t printing images such as thes

Noticing they were struggling, the inspectors suggested they hand over ownership.

Seven months later, they found Jack dead in the same crate, covered by a curtain.

Prosecutor Andrew Wiles said: “When the top of the crate was removed it was clear the dog was emaciated. There was an inch or more of faeces covering all of the floor except where the dog was laying.”

The container was teeming with flies and maggots and littered with plastic bags and a takeaway food carton. A water bowl was full of excrement, as was the dog’s mouth.

Mr Wiles said: “There was a strong smell of ammonia, faeces and decomposing flesh.”

Lifting Jack out of the pen, an RSCPA inspector said she could feel his spine from the underside of his body.

Mr Wiles said: “She described it as the thinnest dog she had ever seen.”

A post mortem examination showed Jack was emaciated, had no fat and likely died of starvation.

The examining vet concluded Jack “suffered greatly and unnecessarily for a great period of time”.

Defending Lockhurst, Robert DeBanzie said she suffered from “pronounced learning disabilities” and emotional problems and has since been rehoused in a respite centre in Erith where she had made “gigantic steps”.

Lockhurst was granted unconditional bail while probation reports are prepared. She will return for sentencing at Dartford Magistrates’ Court on September 7.

Judge Kelly said: “There is a real risk you will be serving a prison sentence for this.”

Defending Brunsden, Frederick Hookway argued his client had reduced culpability because he did not live at the house where the dog was kept, although he did stay there sometimes.

Sentencing Brunsden to 20 weeks in prison and disqualifying him for life from owning animals, Judge Kelly said: “This is one of the worst cases of animal cruelty I have come across.

“This dog was confined in a little cage so small it appears it could barely stand up.

“It was kept there without being allowed out at all for any exercise or freedom and was starved to death.

“You could have released the dog. You could have provided food for it. You were offered help and advice from the RSPCA.

“I can’t think that any human being would have failed to recognise the suffering and distress of this dog.”

Why would you have a dog just to treat it this way? Yes the pictures are distressing but it just shows how vile and evil people can be. I will never understand someone who can do this to an animal, to me it is the worse abuse, beside child abuse, you can cause.

Totally agree, should have got 20 years, not 20 weeks.

I hate any form of abuse and neglect against anything that is unable to look after and care for itself. Be it an animal, child, the elderly or someone with significant learning difficulties.

What makes this case even worse was they were offered help from the RSPCA. Low life scum.

Its a pity the RSPCA didnt take the dog sooner, I would like those 2 to be in a small cage and not fed, but I'll be moaned at by some do gooder, and what an excuse, "I have learning difficulties" you would not have to be einstein to know that poor animal was in dire need of food and water. 20 weeks is NOT long enough!!

how sad is this picture and how that poor dog must have suffered. I have had dogs all my life. after i had to have my last shepherd put to sleep due to old age and back legs going , which broke my heart
i have moved into a small flat so i can no longer have a dog as i don,t think its right to have a dog in a small flat , I hope the scum that did this to that poor animal get what they deserve in prison if i had my way they would be locked in the same size as that poor dog . rot in jail you scum bags

Very sad story and when i saw pictures of this poor shepherd puppy jack i was crying. Paul Brusden should be put into cage and let him suffered same way what he did to this poor jack. 20 weeks not enough! !!! He deserve hard punishment!!! I have same shepherd she will be two years old she is part of our family same with our cat. We lost shepherd two years ago he had bone cancer and i missed him so much. Its really sad to see those pictures of dead jack. :’( :’( . I am big animal lover and i hate creeps who hurts animals. Very sad to think about it how much was this inocent poor jack suffering! ! I cant even imagine seven long months was this poor dog suffering locked in crate all day all night no food no water no fresh air and covered with blanket??? We are not depending on dogs they depending on us they need us we have to feed them we have to look after them they are our best friends. Why this guy with that girl did this to beautifull puppy jack???!!! Guy in vancouver canada was abusing two year old german shepherd for two months he beat him up with big chain and baseball bat then he stubbed him throw him to garbage bin wraped in bloody blanket and he was still alive. Couple found him next morning spca rushed him to hospital this poor inocent dog died he didnt make it. I wish he still be alive i will adopt him. His mother knew she set her son has some mental problem. Then why she didnt report this? ?? What is wrong with some people in this world?? Why this poor dogs have to suffered beside creeps like this two guys??!! This guy in vancouver is 25 same as that other guy. There is no justice for animal cruelty and it should be strong one!!!

I'm sorry to say I received some raffle tickets from the RSPCA today and I have returned them. I have always supported the RSPCA but I wont be in future. I support independent animal sanctuaries and will sent them what the RSPCA usually get from me. I am furious that the RSPCA let this poor dog down so badly. I wish you could remove the photograph of the stupid boy - his grinning face is really making me angry!!

Looking at this woman's Facebook page, it appears that she has a young child, so she can't really use her 'pronounced learning disabilities' and 'emotional problems' as a defence. If so, then the child should be taken into care for her own safety!

Yes i am very angry what that idiot did to this poor inocent puppy. I have same dog and she look like this poor jack and if i am looking at her it comes to my mind poor jack. We lost shepherd two years ago he had cancer we went to states with him for treatments try to save him and he last only four months after treatment i missed him so much. I dont understand why some people tortured animals!! Like i set before i hope somebody will look after this guy and girl who tortured poor jack and same with guy in canada vancouver! I cant stop thinking how he was suffering in that crate 7 months and i just cry. Big animal lover! Hopefully there will be revange they deserve it!!! When i saw pictures of that puppy and i was reading that article he was locked in that crate whole 7 months without food and water no fresh air covered with blanket i start crying like little baby. Even my husband was shocked when i showed him this pic. Deeply sorry for jack they didnt save his life!!! If they knew that he was in danger they should take him away from this loosers idiots. That story about another two year old shephered who was beat up with big chain and baseball bat then stubed with knife by the owner 25 year old Brian Whitlock happened in vancouver canada. He dumped him wraped in blanket loaded with blood to garbage bin next morning he was discoverd by couple who called spca they rushed him to animal hospital this poor dog died later he was seriously injured!! This guy need to be punished but here in canada i dont know what will happened!! If he wont be charged i hope somebody will beat him up very hard he will end up on whell chair or he will be killed! People who is like this guy or that other guy and girl who let starved to death poor jack in london deserved worst punishment! !! It is very easy to sit at a PC and moan and rant but the reality is the RSPCA is the only charity that puts the welfare of animals first and works around the clock fighting abuse and cruelty.

Hello mr Krumblez i am from canada, Britisch columbia i am 100% agree with you this two bastards deserve to die and hopefully they will. I hope there will be somebody who will tortured them up to death. Since aug 2 nd when i saw those pictures of that inocent beautifull poor puppy i cant sleep i just keep crying when i am thinking about it how that poor jack was suffering for long seven months in that crate :’( . Iset before my shepherd is going to be two years old next month and when i am looking at her i can see that poor jack because he look like my dog. She is like our child!! We love her so much and our cat too. My previous shepherd died in june 2010 and i missed him deeply!! This two bastards need to go from this world!!!! And same with guy who dumped that poor two year old shephard brutaly beat up by him to dumpster and poor dog died on serious injury need to be killed same way. This happened in vancouver canada three weeks ago. **** bastards! !! I hope they are reading this comments from people make sure they know how people wants them dead!!!!

As a lifelong animal lover, I find this story extremely upsetting and disturbing to think that any human being can be capable of such atrocities is beyond belief. When i am looking on my shepherd she will be two years old next month i can see this poor jack she looked like him when she was puppy whole body black and brown legs same like this poor jack. I cant stop thinking how he was suffering in that crate and he will like to go for walk, and want to play! Crying again:’(:’(:’( .When i see our shepherds crate it make me sick because i can see jack how he was locked there for long 7 months he couldnt even stand up he couldnt go out and do his bussiness its just so sad. RSPCA SEIZE AND KILL 5 HEALTHY CATS

CHARITY PLAYING GOD AND VICTIMISING PENSIONERS, YET AGAIN!

A RETIRED woman finally reunited with her dog ten months after it was seized by the RSPCA has revealed how her life was turned upside down by the animal charity.
Spinster Georgina Langley, 67, lives at a cottage in West Hougham and, since her mother died, has lived with only her pets for company.
She earned a reputation in the village as the "cat lady" and people would leave strays and unwanted pets with her.
On June 22 last year three RSPCA inspectors with police reinforcement swooped on her home and took away her 13 cats, four cockerels and her dog, Sweetie, who she had taken in at the request of villagers.
"It was the start of the most frightening ten months of my life," Miss Langley said. "I've never been in trouble with the police and had never seen the inside of a courtroom."
Within days she was told the RSPCA had put down five of her cats. Frightened Miss Langley contacted her vet, David Smith, who demanded to see the bodies.
Mr Smith of Lakeview Veterinary Centre – which operates in Hawkinge, Finglesham and Deal – said he had been left shocked by the way Miss Langley had been raided and asked the Royal Veterinary College to carry out an independent post-mortem examination on a ginger Tom and an adult female – which was pregnant with three kittens.
He said: "There appears to be no good reason why the RSPCA allowed these animals to be put to sleep. The RVC post mortems concluded the cats were healthy with no signs of incorrect feeding or problems with fleas or other illnesses."
The vet said he believed Miss Langley had become overwhelmed by the responsibility in a house where poor building work had left her with water leaks and lack of lighting.
Mr Smith said: "The inside of her house may not have been in a condition that many people would choose to live, but the animals were happy. This lady needed help and support, not hauling through the courts."
Miss Langley's court ordeal began in August when she was told she would face 13 charges of neglect and failing to look after her animals properly.
She was given legal aid to fight her case and was represented by Nigel Weller, a solicitor from East Sussex who has built a reputation fighting RSPCA court cases.
After three preliminary hearings, Miss Langley faced a three-day trial in March, but the RSPCA dropped 11 of the 13 charges. Miss Langley pleaded guilty to failing to get veterinary care quickly enough for two of her animals.
The animal charity pushed for court costs of £28,000, asking magistrates to make an order on the pensioner's home, and called for her to be banned from keeping animals.
But on Friday, April 20, magistrates ordered that Miss Langley's dog, cockerels and one cat should be returned. She was given a conditional discharge with no fine or costs imposed.
"It was such a relief," said Miss Langley. "I agreed the surviving cats could be rehomed and I would keep just one. I cannot believe an organisation like the RSPCA could be so heavy-handed – I would never treat anyone the way they have treated me."
The RSPCA said it had no plans to review its use of vets following criticism the five cats should not have been destroyed and maintained that it works with people who find difficulty looking after their animals .
Spokeswoman Klare Kennett said: "We tried to help Miss Langley, but were turned away, so had no choice but to take the animals into our care."
She said the costs of £28,000 covered the charity's bill for bringing the case to court.
Miss Langley, who walks with a stick because she needs a new hip, now receives home visits twice a week through Social Services to help her cope at home.

I was just reading that article rspca took those cats and dog from ms Langley. If there was no sign of animal abuse then why they took them from her? ?!! And what was the reason to put few of them down? ?!! Who cares how many cats she has if she is looking after them properly!! Shame on rspca they took animals from ms Langley house where they look happy but they didnt take this poor PUPPY JACK from this two f looserss hands. For RSPCA are you guys crazy?? Basicly rspca left this poor jack to die in this two bastards care!!! Can you imagine what this poor puppy went through???!! I cant even sleep i just keep crying when i am thinking about jack how much he was suffering in that stupid crate!! And i am thinking about him all the time :’( . How many more animals are suffering up there in monsters hands up there??!! Rspca should do their job and if they will remove this inocent beautifull jack from this two creeps jack still be alive and some good person will adopt him. This dog was just a baby why he have to die this brutal way??!! I have hard time to see letters when i am typing because i just start crying. I am big animal lover and i hate monsters like Paul Brunsden and Lockhurst! !! They deserve to die! !! By suffering! !! Kill them same way how they killed poor jack! ! 20 weeks in jail for this? ??!!! Are you guys crazy???!!! Law in uk suck like law in canada!! Who ever gave sentence to this idiot Brunsden has no feeling for this inocent puppy dog. Can you imagine how he was trying to get out from this hell crate and he couldnt???!! Try to go in and you wont be able to get out from there how that feel!! This is not a justice this is bs!!! Same here in canada guy beat up two year old shepherd and stubbed him after dumped him to garb bin alive suffering! ! He was rushed to emergency next morning by spca but next morning he died on serious injury. Crying again :’( . He is going to court on aug 9. This happened three weeks ago. This guy is 25 years old too and he beat up his dog with chain and baseball bat then stubbed him with swiss knife i hope this guy will be punished by somebody same way and also this Brunsden and Lockhurst because jail for short time is not enough they need to go from this world in brutal way same way as this poor dogs went jack and captain and many more. Thinking about you jack and captain :’(:’( .

I dont know what this petition will do in english court and i know we wont bring this poor jack back but i signed this petition for inocent jack and wont hurt me to sign this. Maybe it wont help and maybe it will they collect 2419 signatures already since august 3. Worth it to try i guess. Hopefully this two Lockhurst and Brusden will pay for that what they did to this puppy.
