HUSKIES are known for hauling sledges across the snow at huge speed but this one is a sheep in wolf’s clothing.

Meet the unusual Lewisham stray who hates running, loves people and has a fear of stairs.

Siberian huskies are famed for being hard-working, racing dogs – travelling up to 40 miles in a day – and being aloof.

But Nando – nicknamed for his addiction to chicken – breaks the mould and refuses to run, sitting whenever he can and slumping on the top of stairs to avoid using them.

He was found in a park in Lewisham last month and has surprised staff at Battersea Dogs and Cats Home with his behaviour.

Rehoming and Welfare Assistant Hannah O’Gorman said: “Traditionally Huskies are energetic working dogs who pull sleds, but we don’t think that life would suit Nando, as he is always lying down!

“He’s clearly not had much training in the past so we are trying to help him overcome his fears and teach him that walking on a lead or going down stairs doesn’t mean he has to flatten himself to the floor.”

The breed is becoming increasingly popular as pets in the UK but some owners do not research them properly and abandon them.

Ms O’Gorman said: “Huskies are incredibly intelligent and strong-willed, so they need to be trained from puppies.

“Many people just see them as cute bundles of fluff when they are young, forgetting that they will turn into a smart, large, and often demanding adult.”

Battersea is now looking for a new home for Nando with an owner who understands his breed. He would suit a home without other dogs and without children, ideally away from the city, with his own garden.
