Christopher Tappin given date for his extradition to America

Christopher Tappin is set to be extradited to the USA next Friday (February 24) Christopher Tappin is set to be extradited to the USA next Friday (February 24)

CHRISTOPHER Tappin will be extradited to the United States next Friday (February 24), his lawyer has said.

The retired businessman, who lives in Farnborough Park, Orpington, has been asked to attend Heathrow police station on February 24, when US marshals will escort him in custody to America, his lawyer Karen Todner said.

Mr Tappin is accused of conspiring to sell components for Iranian missiles.

The 65-year-old failed in a last-ditch plea to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) to block extradition earlier this week.

So we'll happily ship out this guy out in chains to the US when no hard evidence of his crime has been presented here. At the same time as he'll be facing much harsher treatment and punishment (if found guilty) than he would here, we're
'forced' to support the likes of Abu Qatada thanks to the same clique of head in the clouds ECHR judges. What a great system, NOT!

I see, so because there's "no smoke witout fire" he's automatically guilty eh? Don't know why we bother with courts at all in that case......

If he's innocent why all the delaying tactics to avoid extradition? Put your faith in trial by jury and go to the USA voluntarily!

Just pack plenty of lube Tappin, and if the worst comes to the worst the border and Ciudad Juárez are only a few blocks from the detention centre.
I hear the maricons love an ol' gringo in El Paso..

Yeah right! If you were accused of a crime you'd do exactly that wouldn't you - choose to be tried in a foreign country and face all the attendant problems and costs associated with a different legal system. lol

Let's not forget that not a shred of prima facie evidence has been presented to the authorities here regarding what this guy is supposed to have done. As it stands, the US (the architects and landlords of Guantanamo Bay) can claim anyone in the UK has done something illegal under US law and have them extradited without presenting any evidence. Quite ludicrous!

I echo what Slonik has said, we will happily send one of our own to court in another country but not a convicted terrorist to Jordan for fear of death. and on that not I echo peugeot pete who said "if you can't do the tim don't do the crime" Double standards don't you think?

I do hope the "no smoke without fire" brigade (pardon the pun) don't ever get called for jury service.....

I am pretty shocked at the comments people have posted on here. This guy is a 63 year old grandfather who cares for his chronically ill wife. Can any of you put yourselves in his position and the position of his family? Why would he voluntarily go to the States when he could face up to 5 years on remand before even being tried? The legal system in this country should protect those who are innocent and fundamentally works on the theory innocent until proven guilty. I think he has been severely let down by our justice system and the fact that the government has done nothing to protect this British Citizen. I knew the family as a child and he is a very unlikely guy to be involved in anything like this. I agree with Slonik - lets hope none of you ever have to do jury service!

As I said before if he's done nothing wrong a trial will establish that. Or do we just want to indulge in a bit of America bashing?

Who's America bashing? It's the British Government who have let him down! It comes to something when an Iranian radical cleric cannot be deported to his home country because its a violation of his human rights - what rights does Chris Tappin have???

I think the NS's spin on this is rather blinkered - there is a fair amount of evidence (including the fact that he seems to have admitted doing it, but is pleading ignorence - not a defence when I last checked - http://www.bbc.co.uk
/news/uk-england-lon
don-16808153) and it can't really be said that the US judicial system (when it comes to white men at least) is as corrupt as the Jordanian one which Abu Qatada would face.

The UK is fighting hard on behalf of Gary McKinnon - i.e. someone for whom there is good reason for them not to be extradited. Tappin's case will have been reviewed by exactly the same people and their conclusion is to let him go.

It is not ludicrous. It is a tragic violation of an individual's rights. What makes anyone think that he will receive a fair and balanced trial in Texas of all places?

To the person who commented that "This guy is a 63 year old grandfather who cares for his chronically ill wife." - That is totally irrelevant. His age and the fact that he's a carer doesn't have any bearing on his innocence per se.

Whilst I hate so much of what America stands for as a country, we could learn a thing or to about extradition. They're pretty ruthless. As people on here have mentioned, it's ridiculous that we let criminals stay in this country on human rights grounds.
