A MAIN road remains closed because of a large fire at a skip yard on the Sidcup and Orpington border which started on Saturday (December 3).

Sevenoaks Way has been closed between the A224 Cray Road/ A20 (Crittal’s Corner) and Midfield Way since the blaze started at around 6.40pm that evening.

Firefighters managed to get the fire at the site at the end of Cornwall Drive under control in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Working in four hour shifts of up to 35 firefighters at a time they worked around the clock tackling the pile of rubbish, which is around 30m by 30m in size.

The fire has now been downgraded so only four crews are now at the scene rather than the six which had been there since Saturday.

They are expected to be there for much of the day damping down hot spots until they are satisfied it is completely out.
