Protestors to form 'wall of buggies' at threatened animal centre in Maryon Wilson Park, Charlton

PARENTS with buggies will descend on an animal centre next week in a protest over its potential closure.

Protestors will gather around the animal enclosure in Charlton's Maryon Wilson Park to form a "protective wall of buggies", organisers say.

Those taking part will meet at the duck pond at around 12pm on October 12 with the protest set to last one hour.

Planned cuts by Greenwich Council could see the centre closed next April unless an alternative is found.

A petition organised as part of the STAMP (Save The Animals of Maryon Wilson Park) campaign against the closure has attracted more than 7,500 signatures online and on paper so far.

It is due to be presented to the council by the Friends of Maryon and Maryon Wilson Parks on October 26.

instead of doing a protest which will probably not achieve anything, why dont all the people who put their name on the petition get together and find out how much it would be to run this place and then divide that amongst themselves and then they can run it.

Petitions are fine, but reminding Councillors that you wont vote for them at the next election is far more effective.

Remember, Councillors (who think themselves as Champions for the people) are there to represent you, not themselves or their own agenda.

Go and see your Councillors and tell them to fight this decision.

I was about to say that same thing. Maybe these parents should put their hands in their pockets instead

I'm sorry, but in a recession priorities apply - I am an animal lover, but harsh choices have to be made with funding all over the country now, and I would rather see any available money funding vital services than animals, sad as that is. Why not set up a charity, fundraise and run it as a small zoo? If you are that committed to saving the animals, then that would make much more sense than a publicity stunt that won't make any difference at all, surely? Or is that all you are prepared to give to the cause?
