Sutton Councillor’s fury over shop’s golliwog dolls

One of the dolls in the shop window One of the dolls in the shop window

A councillor is protesting against a gift shop over its decision to sell controversial golliwog dolls.

Sutton Councillor Lester Holloway has organised the protest outside the Memory Lane gift shop in Times Square shopping centre, after branding the dolls rascist.

He has asked the shop, near Sutton High Street, to take them off the shelves.

But a spokesman for the shop, which displays three of the dolls in its windows, defied his requests, and said it sold several hundred of the stuffed toys each year, and they were not illegal.

The image of the doll, which started as a character in children's books in the late 19th century, was featured in Enid Blyton books, and used by British jam manufacturer James Robertson & Sons as its mascot before it was removed after boycotts of the product, is the subject of heated debate.

Some argue it should be preserved as a cultural artefact.

Others argue they have long been associated with rascist stereotypes and insults of racism against people of African descent.

Councillor Holloway said: “Next month is black history month and as someone who is of mixed race, I find the dolls particularly offensive.

“They mock black people’s features and are reminiscent of colonial oppression and overt racism. They have no place in Sutton and should not be on display.”

Coun Holloway, a representative of Sutton North ward, has organised the protest on Facebook, and will be speaking on BBC radio this weekend to galvanise support for the protest.

A spokesman for the Memory Lane shop said: “I respect Coun Holloway’s right to protest, but we do not believe stocking and selling the dolls is an offence or offensive.”

He said the shop had received only one other complaint in the 10 years it had stocked the dolls.

Police and Sutton trading standards have been consulted by Coun Holloway over the matter but have not taken action because selling the dolls is not illegal.

A Sutton police spokesman said: “There are no criminal offences. This is a matter between individuals and the store.”

A Sutton Council spokesman said: “We understand the historical origins of the golliwog mean some people find them offensive but no law is being broken and there is no action for the council or the police to take.”

Protesters will meet outside Sutton station at noon on Friday, October 7, before marching on the store.

The golliwog was first introduced as a children's character by New York author Florence Upton in 1895.

• Based on a minstrel doll, the character was adopted by Enid Blyton in her Noddy books, as a badly behaved and often criminal figure.

• In recent years, it has become a figure of controversy after being interpreted by many as a crude racial stereotype, with the term was used as a racial slur.

• It was removed from the famous Robertson jam label in 2001 after public and political pressure.

• In March 2007, officers from Greater Manchester Police seized two golliwogs from a shop after a complaint that the dolls were offensive.

• This month an Enid Blyton fan was banned from selling the dolls at a vintage market in Bournemouth after council officials branded them racist.

Oh no another pc bonkers councillor. Unfortunately does not represent my ward so I can't help to vote him out next time. Golliwogs are just dolls. As a very young child I had a golliwog and a teddy bear. When I went to primary school in Tooting we didn't know what black people were like: never saw one. The first black boy we had in the class was treated with respect and affection. Golliwogs had no effect on that: we saw no connection. Having a golliwog has never inhibited me from having lovely black friends. Having a teddy bear has not caused me to harm any bears. In fact quite the opposite I am an animal lover and only yesterday signed up to a protest about endangered bears being shot by moronic hunters for their bloodthirsty pleasure. Sorry councillor I don't agree with you. I suggest you get less precious and more grown up. Having said that I want one of them. Anyone know how much they are please?

Goodness Gracious me, what is Britain coming to? Gingerbread men are now called Gingerbread people, blackboards, chalkboards. Political Correctiveness in this country is more of a negative issue than an apparently offensive toy! No wonder nobody deals with the real issues in this borough if a Councillor has time to organise a protest on this absolutely laughable issue. Personally, I think the shop selling the toy should set up a stall outside memory lane gift shop, because that is what a Golliwog is to me, a great trip down memory lane!

What is going on with these so called elected officials?

Of all the issues effecting Sutton residents ,this one seems to be on the top of his list of priorities.

How about a campaign by Councillor Holloway to sort out all the litter, chewing gum and graffiti along Sutton High Street. Or how about providing enough police presence so that residents are not woken up by drunken yobs at 3 am every Fri/Sat/Sun morning. Alongside smashed up fences, car door mirrors and other private property?

Anyone else enjoy walking down the High Street late on a Friday evening? Can we diversifying trade in the the town so that it isn't all pubs, bars and gangs of drunken under-age being a nuisance?

How about organising an initiative to sort out Sutton's road congestion and the associated noise, pollution and traffic fumes. Does every police car have to blast its siren? even at 4 am in the morning?

Or trying to have a variation of business at the end of the High Street so that it isn't all just kebab shops, pubs, cash lending establishments and other fast food establishments.

Making sure our crumbling, third world roads and pavements with fading street markings and vandalised signs and properly maintained.

The list is endless regarding what these councillors could should be expending their energies on.

Ask them about these issues though and the silence would be deafening!

I have carefully studied the photos in the article of Cllr Hester and the doll. They don't look anything like each other - and I am up to date with my spectacle prescription. I would never confuse their identities, never call Cllr Hester a doll and when I buy mine - just found they are a fiver - I certainly won't name it Hester. That's a promise.

People who take offence at name calling and golliwogs and the like have the power to end the problem....don't take offence. Rise above it and ignore it. Words are only powerful if you let them effect you. A golliwog doll is just a doll until some touchy, in the minority, idiots decide to take offence. All this prep work for Black History month (what???... why???) must have got the councillor all fired up.

hello, you have been quoted as saying "these mock black peoples features"
i would like to ask you if you have ever seen a black person who looks anything like these dolls? because i certainly haven't the golly's features are a caricature of the american black faced minstrels, in effact the caricature of a caricature.
I am of anglo indian decent and i take no offence in the apperance of these dolls, the use of the word wog however is unacceptable and this has been recognised which is why they have been re-named and the sale of any original golliwog's banned, which i fully support.
surely if what your saying is correct why stop there? should we protest against clowns? how about the use of white boards like they have done with black boards? how about white and brown bread and sugar???
this is political correctness gone mad.
you are in a position to make a real difference to this community, and i believe there are more pressing issues within the community that could use your attention.
many thanks,

"Protesters will meet outside Sutton station at noon on Friday, October 7, before marching on the store". Why Sutton Station? From how far afield is he bussing and training in the protest group? This could feel intimidating to people who like dolls. Hopefully by the time they arrive at the store they will have sold out due to extraordinarily high demand. I'm getting mine tomorrow to avoid the rush. Lester has been told that the Golly dolls break no laws. I hope the protest group does not break any either such as causing fear or stress to peaceful shoppers in Memory Lane.

Lets widen this argument to show its stupidity. Barbie dolls are synonymous with white blonde women who are intellectually retarded only capable of matching shoes with handbags. This image of Barbie is known by everyone. Are there protests to ban them?. Are blonde councillors (whom there are many) organising marches against them?...No of course not.

The actions of coun Holloway are rooted in an embittered past that does not represent the multicultural mix AND harmony that actually exists with the vast majority of people in this country. Please, let common sense prevail not out dated attitudes from an era that most of us have grown out of, but sadly it seems, not all.

However, it would be interesting to know what Black people think about this controversy. Chances are they're smiling at all the Politically Correct Whiteys getting tied up in knots on this issue.

This all sounds so daft, at the end of the day its a doll isn't it? how about making the elected members of Sutton council do more worth while things then complain about something so trivia, I do wonder how much tax payers money was used to set up this Facebook group? This may sound a bit cynical, but I think this could just be a bit of political theatre to get more of the electorate to vote for them? How about doing something about the waste of money within the council for example 2 million pounds spent on high street furniture in times of austerity, I hope all nine of the Facebook group members have fun protesting, as if we need anymore of that.

They are not positioned in any special place or shown in any way that makes them any different from any other doll that is sold there. If this shop "refused" to sell them then surely this could be deemed offensive to some people. It is a fact in this world that you cannot please everyone so why must some peoples lives be more troubled by what seems to be someone just looking to make a point. One of the shop owners is off sick trying to recover from a serious op and the lady trying to cope alone in the doll business she loves and is an expert in is stressed out by all this hoo-ha. Councillor Holloway had better be careful if he's bringing in black activist rent a mob to gather at Sutton Station for his march "on the shop" whatever that may mean. People are jumpy after the riots. He says he is a furious man and I deduce he was rude and aggressive to the lady with his foot stamping. As for black history month not I'm interested myself more interested in Sutton's future and how I will cope with the health and welfare cuts. I think he's just trying to use history for a bit of leverage for his own power now and in the future. I chose the history I want to study and follow avidly the preserved steam engine Sutton Council owns. I see the councillor converted to LibDem from his life with Labour on his political journey. He should really be attending to the state of our cemeteries as he is listed on the joint Merton & Sutton Cemetery Committee. Perhaps he thinks that is too dead-end a job for his aspirations. And yes I agree a dead wringer for Charlie Williams, nicely observed. I hope the poor shop owners will be slightly compensated for their ordeal by overwhelming orders for the lovely, happy, cuddly gollies. Consider buying a golly only a fiver to show your support. There is a lovely Robertson Jam one with the yellow waistcote. As for the councillor you voted him in and you can vote him out if you decide he is not an asset to the community.

Sutton is a largely peaceful Town and has had no problem with the selling of classic and traditional dolls. It will be interesting to see where Councillor Lester is drawing his fellow marchers from and how far they have travelled to reach Sutton. He must now be the biggest embarrassment to the LibDems since Opik Lemit with his Saucy Girls and pronouncements that we were about to be hit by a giant meteorite. Opik looked nothing like a Golly either - he was just a clown. What has Lester got to say about the eviction of Alzheimers patients from the LBS home into private homes? A nurse at one such home was recently in the Guardian news for kicking a woman patient while she was on the floor and he thought no one else was looking. That's real harm, not innocent dolls.
