WALTHAM FOREST: Concern over competition for jobs

THERE are at least 25 people chasing each job in Waltham Forest - the second highest rate in London.

According to the office of national statistics, there are 9,455 residents in the borough on unemployment benefits, but only 375 job centre vacancies.

Union the GMB says it is "seriously concerned" at the latest figures, which show that 2.49 million people nationwide are unemployed.

While the average ratio of jobseekers to vacancies in London is 11, Waltham Forest's is one of the worst in the country with an employment rate of 64.5 per cent.

Worst is Haringey, which has a ratio of 28 jobseekers for every vacancy.

However Conservatives such as Waltham Forest party leader Cllr Matt Davis have accused the GMB of "spinning" unemployment statistics, and said many people in the capital do not stay within borough boundaries when working or looking for jobs.

But Paul Kenny, GMB general secretary, said the figures were worrying and blamed the Tory and Lib Dem Government's cuts for "stalling" the economy.

He said: "These important figures on unemployment must be a serious cause for concern for both the Government and the communities affected.

"GMB experience is that the position on the ground is getting worse. With government getting rid of tens of thousands of public sector jobs and with the private sector either stalling or going backwards the outlook in many areas is very worrying bordering on bleak."

But Employment Minister Chris Grayling said:"These are disappointing figures but we always said that the road to recovery would be choppy.

"Clearly this has been a difficult few months with a range of one-off factors and a slowdown in the world economy having an impact on the UK. This is why is we are focused on taking steps to increase growth, support the economy and encourage businesses to invest and create jobs.”

Waltham Forest Council is holding a jobs fair at the Assembly Room by the town hall in Forest Road, Walthamstow, on Tuesday September 6.

Cllr Afzal Akram, cabinet member for corporate resources, business and employment, said: “The Waltham Forest Jobs Fair is running between 10am and 4pm and promises opportunities for work with dozens of local employers who will be looking to meet prospective employees.”

Businesses attending include Matalan, TGI Fridays and The Armed Forces, along with The London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG).

There will also be advice on training, interview techniques and CV writing.

It can't be that bad - Many Eastern Europeans have had no problem finding work in all the trades, bus driving, bars, shops etc all above min wage in this area - so there must be plenty of jobs around!
Perhaps some jobs don't appeal to some people?

It's interesting to look in the phone book, and see how many - or rather, few - employment agencies are located in this Borough, as compared with say, Enfield or Newham. For years workplaces have been displaced by housing all across this area. Even a petrol station turning into a dozen flats is another four or five jobs lost. The largest remaining employers seem to be the retailers, which on balance probably take money out of the area. I've wondered for some time whether there has been some tacit strategic agreement to turn this Borough into a dormitory for low-wage transients. As Cllr Davis says, many people work outside the Borough: in fact, I believe we have the highest proportion of our population doing so of all London Boroughs, not at all an environmentally-frie
ndly situation. Long hours of commuting disrupt family life, and may mean that after-work social spending happens elsewhere. Another catch, which Cllr Davis doesn't appear to see, is that nothing can be done to improve transport capacity, while the Council has , incredibly, agreed to plan for another 20,000 people to live here in the next decade. You would never guess that our extensive planning guidelines lay down that development should always have an eye to employment implications!
Would Cllr Davis be willing to stand alongside his other Councillors and make a stand to central governmnet, saying; 'Either we get more jobs, or we need fewer people!'
Do Councillors even see it as part of their duty to say No to central government these days, when the need arises?

Yet again Cllr Davis is in denial about reality in Tory Britain. Tomorrow I start a new job after three years out of work, and I'm a degree educated IT professional. The neighbouring boroughs aren't lined with gold and jobs on every corner. They're just slightly less screwed than WF.

G_Whiz. That is one of the most ignorant comments I have witnessed on here.

I've never worked in the borough in which I live, nor would I expect to, and neither should anyone else. You need to go where the jobs are, if you sit around expecting them to come to you, then be prepared for a long wait.

That said, its no good this council slinging up houses and flats left right and centre without investing also in local business areas in order to help local businesses to survive and maybe be able to employ additional people. Simple actions such as removing onerous parking charges and restrictions would be a start!

'You need to go where the jobs are..'
On the personal level, quite right: one can never assume that there's a job on the doorstep. But in the aggregate, what if all Boroughs took Cllr Davis' complacent view? There does seem to be something missing specifically here, and it's crazy from all points of view for people to be trekking twice across London every day when, on balance (the City excepted, and even that could be questioned nowadays), there should be an averaging out of people and work opportunities.

If Waltham Forest has to satisfy itself with being a dormitory for commuters, at least enable us to get in and out of the bloody place!

PS: The responsibility of your Tory Mayor, Cllr Davis, and one in which he has signally (forgive the pun) failed.
