Plans for Policing 2000 in Barnet became reality this week when the borough's single division came into being.
The move is Chief Supt Simon Humphrey's scheme to provide better policing in the borough with less officers and funds.
Colindale and Barnet divisions have been amalgamated, while Hertsmere will remain under the same umbrella until April 2000 when it will separate to become an independent division.
Supt Charles Phelps told the Hendon & Finchley Times: "The boundaries will be the same as the health authority, the local authority and the borough. We will constantly review how we are performing."
There will now be three sites in the borough where patrols are based instead of five.
"The advantages are that officers should be better briefed," added Mr Phelps. "Now it's a case of making it work." (See next week's Hendon & Finchley Times for more information about the merger.)
