BY VISITING their website, you can tell Flipron are not your average band. They come across as an out-there indie alternative, which reminds me of the quirky British Sea Power.

Their second album, Biscuits For Cerberus, is a strange collection of musical styles but it does work very well.

Opening track Cerberus Is As Cerberus Does has a Flaming Lips/Super Furry Animals feel, but whereas those bands have a happy spaced-out sound, with Flipron there is still an element of darkness.

There are several songs about the process of growing old - an unusual topic for four young lads - such as Youth Shall Never Beat Old Age In A Race and Mingers In Paradise.

The musical style shifts throughout the album, from the spaced-out opening track to the bluesy Big & Clever, to the downright spooky instrumental Interlude: The Egg-Slicer, The Cheese-Grater, The Knife.

Jesse Budd's downbeat but witty lyrics sound like a cross between punk poet John Cooper Clarke and I Am Kloot frontman John Bramwell, with a hint of Badly Drawn Boy.

Perhaps the best way to describe this album is as a soundtrack to a 1950s detective film.

You can imagine some bloke in a raincoat and trilby walking through rain-soaked streets at night on his way to a smoky bar.

If you are looking for an album with a few killer singles, this is not the record for you.

But if, like me, you want albums to be full of atmosphere with a bit of quirkiness thrown in, this is one worth listening to.
