100-year-old anti-nuclear campaigner celebrates with CND peace vigil in Wimbledon

Wimbledon Disarmament Coalition’s oldest member will celebrate her 100th birthday with a special vigil for peace on Friday evening.
Mabel Cluer was born with a spinal disability, which prevented her from going to school as a child so she was schooled at home.
She recalls seeing wounded soldiers with amputated limbs and other injuries walking on crutches during WWI, and said later in life she realised how little politicians did to prevent the bombing, which killed and maimed civilians.
Mrs Cluer, who lives in Elm Walk, Raynes Park, became involved with the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament in the 1980s when she demonstrated against cruise missiles and said she felt strongly more should have been done to prevent despots from coming to power.
The vigil takes place at St Mark’s Place, near Wimbledon library on Friday, April 15.
