Tubby Reddy, chief executive of South African Sports Confederation and Olympics Committee visited the university in Strawberry Hill as part of the preparations for the team’s London 2012 Olympic training, on Thursday.
He was given a tour of the campus grounds and running track and shown the site of the new sports facilities on campus as well as the sport injuries clinic, physiology and biomechanics laboratories.
Mr Reddy also met with two of the Great British athletes James Brewer and Andrew Osagie who are training at the university, who gave him an athletes point of view on the facilities at the university in Waldegrave Road.
Talking about his visit, he said: ‘My colleagues came and did the visit last year and I am very excited especially with the new sport facility we were shown, that I am sure will be a superb one stop shop for sport scientists and those doing strength and conditioning.
University principal professor Philip Esler said: “The whole of the St Mary’s community eagerly looks forward to hosting the South African team and to doing all we can to ensure they have a successful and enjoyable London Olympics.”
