Two groups of protesters are set to hold demonstrations against job losses and home care charges when councillors set the budget tomorrow.

The GMB union will rally outside Kingston Guildhall on Tuesday evening against “completely unnecessary” cuts to local government spending.

Nadine Houghton, of the union, said: “The coalition Government is carrying out the biggest swindle of our time.

“This is why the GMB has called a lobby of Kingston Council. On the day the council sets its budget local people will turn out to tell the council cuts to jobs and services will not be tolerated.”

Disability campaigners also plan to continue their campaign against an increase in charges for people who use home care services.

Last Thursday's budget-setting meeting in Haringey was disrupted when protesters stormed the civic centre and police were called to clear the chamber.

The council will meet at 7.30pm on Tuesday, March 1.
