UPDATE: Lambeth Council passes budget amid massive protests

Protesters force their way into the town hall Protesters force their way into the town hall

Lambeth council has passed budget cuts of £79m after a stormy meeting this evening.

Earlier, protestors stormed Lambeth town hall in Brixton as councillors met to rubber stamp plans to shave the money from council services over the next three years.

Councillors had to continue their meeting in another room under police guard as up to 60 protestors filled the council chamber.

After the meeting, Lambeth Council leader, Councillor Steve Reed, said: "I think what they did was wrong, but I understand why they did it and why they are angry with the Government cuts."

The council said Government cuts had forced it into savings of £79m over three years.

But unions want the council to refuse to implement them.
