Protestors stormed Lambeth town hall tonight as councillors met to rubber stamp plans to shave £79m off the budget.
Some 60 demonstrators took control of the council chamber, in Brixton, as the council meeting was due to start.
Councillors are now conducting the meeting in another room under police guard.
One eyewitness at the meeting said: “People were pushing to get into the town hall and when police came people were shouting 'this is is a peaceful protest'.
“Protestors are now in the council chamber. There must be about 50 or 60 people in there.
"Councillors are holding their meeting in a separate room in the building, which is being protected by two policeman."
The council said Government cuts had forced it into savings of £79m over three years.
But unions want the council to refuse to implement them.
