Hundreds of mourners today paid their respects to former British heavyweight champion Gary Mason at his funeral.

It was standing room only at Carshalton All Saints church as friends, family, community leaders and famous names from the world of boxing attended the service.

Former World Heavyweight boxing champion Lennox Lewis - the only man to ever defeat Mason - was in attendance, along with British boxing legend Frank Bruno.

Moving tributes were paid to "gentle giant" Mason by family members and friends during the 1hour 45 minute service.

He was then carried from the church by members of his family, and taken to Croydon Cemetery for a private burial at 2pm.

Mason lived on the Roundshaw Estate in Wallington, where he ran his social enterprise, the Rhythmical Empowerment Group.

The 48-year-old, who used to own a stall at Surrey Street Market in Croydon, was killed on January 6 when he was knocked off his bike by a van while cycling in Sandy Lane South, Wallington.
