Book-lovers packed into a library earmarked for closure to show their support for the community resource during a nationwide event.

On Saturday - otherwise known as “Save our Libraries Day” - Battersea residents gathered in York Gardens Library in opposition to its planned closure, which has been orchestrated by Wandsworth Council.

Authors, musicians, poets and entertainers attended the event to show their support for the community campaign - and more pressure is expected to be heaped on the council with the staging of a demonstration outside Wandsworth Town Hall prior to a full council meeting on Wednesday.

A statement released by campaigners, said: “York Gardens Library was only opened in 2000. It is the only communal resource and community space for the attached estates and serves a higher density of people in its catchment area than any other Wandsworth library.”

The council’s consultation into changes to the library service, including the proposal to close York Gardens, ended on Sunday.
