A garden dedicated to those who lost their lives in the Purley train crash on March 4, 1989 has been refurbished.

Southern staff members Lee Crosby, David Scanlon and Austin Manley helped Andy Blake transform the garden by planting new shrubs.

The garden has been tended by Southern staff but has been in need of a makeover for some time.

Hannah Watson, the area station manager, said: "We thought it was about time we did something to make the garden a more fitting tribute to those who lost their lives on that fateful day.

"Lee was instrumental in organising the makeover and we’re very grateful for Andy’s help on this small, but important project."

Southern provided funds for the re-planting and David took the plaque home to clean it and re-mount it on slate, making it the centrepiece of the garden.

Miss Watson said: “Now the garden is somewhere where people can again come in remembrance in years to come while enjoying the wonderful display of plants, flowers and shrubs.”
