A pearly king and queen helped two Ugandan teachers on a trip to Long Ditton learn about English song, dance and sports.

George William Akena and Florence Akullu from Gulu, northern Uganda, visited Long Ditton St Mary's Junior School as part of a project set up by the British Council and African Revival.

Students showed them English dance in a special assembly, and the pair enjoyed a West End production of Stomp.

As part of the sports link, they timed children running, and will do the same at their Kaladima P7 school as part of a virtual Olympics.

Headteacher David Gumbrell said: "I think it surprise them about trying to teach them the difference between want and need. That's the message that's come out of the project.

"It's shown we want a lot of things, but do we need them? Especially in the run up to Christmas, maybe we don't."

He said the teachers asked students to collect as many football shirts as possible, which amazed students who had no idea Premiership clubs were well known in the east African country.
