The Queen attended a private engagement in Richmond today, Clarence House has confirmed.

A spokeswoman confirmed the Queen had been in the borough but would not reveal the location of her visit because it was a private engagement.

Eagle-eyed passersby spotted the Queen's motorcade passing through Twickenham at lunchtime.

The royal Jaguar was surrounded by police motorbike escorts and unmarked security cars when it passed through London Road, Twickenham, at about 12.30pm.

On networking site Twitter users said they had spotted the Queen.

TotallyRichmond tweeted: "Just spotted the Queen driving through Twickenham. Well, she wasn't actually driving..."

@magicfingers72 posted: "I'm 99.99 per cent sure I've just crossed the Queen's car in Twickenham!"

minx100 tweeted: "The queen? Passing Twickenham?"

Chief Inspector Duncan Slade, of Richmond police, said he could not comment on royal movements or engagements but confirmed the motorcade belonged to a senior member of the Royal family.
