As tensions over the controversial decision to take Streatham's ice rink to Brixton rise, MP Chuka Umunna has called for “a degree of compromise” from those involved.

Tesco's new planning application for a 50 per cent bigger, 60,000 sq ft store as part of the revised Streatham Hub retail and residential development will be considered at a planning meeting on October 20.

Part of its revised plans is to have a temporary ice rink in Brixton for at least two years from next summer while a new one is built on the rink's current site in Streatham High Road.

Campaigners opposing the move have stepped-up their efforts in response to the planning date being set.

Brixton Market traders were due to close on Tuesday in protest.

They say placing the temporary rink on a car park will devastate their businesses because shoppers and bulk buyers will not be able to park to visit the market.

At the same time some skaters' groups have set up a petition.

The Save Streatham Skating (SSS) campaign opposes the size of the facilities and lack of seating. It claims they will be detrimental to Olympic hopefuls and ice hockey teams. It said there will be insufficient parking and major safety issues.

The temporary rink is intended to provide “continuity of ice” while supermarket Tesco and Lambeth Council build the new leisure facilities.

But SSS wants the council to hold Tesco to a previous section106 agreement drawn up when the development was given planning permission in 2003.

It committed Tesco to build the new rink and leisure centre before the original facilities closed, and before the supermarket and 250 homes and superstore funding the development.

But the supermarket giant has said because of the current economic climate it would walk away from the development if it had to stick to its original deal.

Mr Umunna said: “Whilst I have great sympathy with the SSS campaign objective to enforce the original s106 Agreement, I can not see how this can be done given what has come to pass and Tesco's position.”

Mr Umunna said the current proposals were “not ideal” but allowed the development to be “completed as soon as possible”. He said the majority of skaters and the ice hockey teams understood this and “the degree of compromise” needed, and negotiations were ongoing to improve the quality of the temporary facilities.
