THE REDESIGNED Potters Bar railway forecourt has been hailed as an example of “how to do it” at a national design award.
The revamped station forecourt was nominated in the urban transport design award at the Annual Transport Practitioners' meeting.
Reopened in December 2008, the forecourt marries bus stops, taxi ranks and cycle parking with pedestrian crossings and a pick-up area at the station in Darkes Lane.
Although it did not win, it was highly commended for costing less than £1 million and providing a “value for money improvement” and a “how to do it benchmark for many other similar locations”.
Larry Heyman, integration and partnership manager for First Capital Connect, which manages the station, said: “The old station forecourt was an eyesore with constant conflict between pedestrians, buses, taxis, delivery vehicles and private cars.
“We now have a well-lit, high quality bus interchange with clearly defined pedestrian walkways. It is no surprise that more and more people are choosing to travel by bus to and from Potters Bar station.”
