A salesman from Tooting is stranded in a Thai hospital after he was paralysed in a crash and did not have insurance.

Tom Moss, 27, was left blind and unable to move from the neck down after his moped was hit by two cars and a lorry in Thailand.

Now his family are trying to raise £35,000 to fly him home - but have so far only found a fraction of the money needed.

His sister, Jamie Harvey, 32, said: “He was out there travelling and living his dream. We didn’t hear much from him apart from the odd Facebook message.

“Then, two weeks ago, we got an email asking us to call the hospital because he was in a motorbike accident.

“It’s been a really emotional time.”

Mr Moss, who lived in Franciscan Road and worked in telesales, went to south east Asia six months ago to travel - working occasionally to support himself.

The crash happened during a night out in Chiang Mai, a province in northern Thailand popular with backpackers.

Since then he has been confined to a hospital bed with brain injuries, sight loss and a broken jaw, cheek bones and nose.

His worried mum, Gina Allaway, 53, rushed out to his bedside but his three sisters and one brother cannot afford to make the journey.

Ms Harvey added: “He’s getting very agitated at the moment. He doesn’t understand why this is happening to him.

“We need him home now. He’s our brother and we love him. If we can’t get him home, he’ll be stuck there - and that is just heartbreaking.

“He needs us all around him - that will be the best help.”

Mr Moss, an keen footballer and Chelsea supporter, grew up in Tooting and attended Wandle and Graveney schools.

A fundraising event at the Wheatsheaf pub on Upper Tooting Road on Saturday made £3,000 for his cause, but much more is needed.

His family are working with the crisis organisation, Mediaviation, to find money to fly him home.
