New NHS trust director appointed

THE health trust in charge of St Albans City Hospital has appointed a new non-executive director.

Chris Green was chief executive of Virgin trains until 2004 and a non-executive chairman in 2004/05.

He has also been an advisor to the House of Commons Select Committee, a trustee with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, in Liverpool, and is currently vice-chairman of Herts Visual Arts Forum.

Professor Thomas Hanahoe, chairman of the West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “I am absolutely delighted to welcome Chris on to the trust board. Chris brings with him a wealth of experience at senior board level and a real focus on customers, which will be invaluable to the trust.”

His salary will be £6,096 per year.

I see the gravy train (Virgin or not) is still going strong.

Why do I believe this appointment will not make a scrap of difference to the quality of the health care and cleanliness of St Albans City Hospital? It will just give the board a wider range of conversation, over the biscuits, when they meet to justify their existence.

His interests seem diverse, so no doubt this will be one of many similar sorts of positions he will continue to hold.

Further to my comment above - I have just read that NHS trusts in England spent more than £300m on external consultancy services last year. The money was used to pay for advice on a range of issues, from legal contracts to human resources and media work.

So it seems over the tea and biscuits they will have a pressing issue to discuss, how best to waste our money!

So Professor Hanahoe is 'delighted' at the "real focus on customers" that Chris brings. I'm sure some past customers of Virgin Trains might dispute this claim.

I have to tell Prof Hanahoe that customers buy products whereas hospitals exist for the benefit of patients who expect to receive medical attention, care, or treatment which at the moment is provided free at the point of need by the NHS.

Spin and PR are clearly still in rude health.
