A GROUP of green fingered plant growers have picked up a housing association prize for creating a community garden oasis.

Residents living in Alexandra Road, Muswell Hill, won the best communal garden category in Barnet Homes' finest flowers competition.

Organiser of the annual event said judges were struck by how the whole community had come together to brighten up their neighbourhood.

The group had used grow bags and hanging baskets to transform a bland concrete area into a “green oasis” thriving with vegetables and plants.

They also created a seating area for people who use the area.

The Geoff Bedingfield outstanding gardening award went to Anthony Gowers, for his work in St Johns Close.

John Barrett, of Crispin Road, won the best front garden competition, while the best containers display award was handed to Jenny Hayes, of Meadfield.

The best sheltered home garden prize was won by Ela Klein, of Wimbush House.

Barnet Homes Chief Executive, Tracey Lees, said: “We work hard to keep the environment clean and green. But it's residents who make the real difference, and we want to give them all the support and encouragement we can.

“There have been some fantastic efforts by our residents to brighten up their homes and neighbourhoods this summer, and it's great that many of our residents are working with each other to achieve this.”

All of the winners will be presented with prizes during a ceremony at Barnet Homes annual general meeting, on November 3.
