A man was stabbed in the leg in front of rush hour commuters on Worcester Park high street on Tuesday night following a running fight between a gang of four or five men.

The injured man, who residents said lives close to the scene, was taken to hospital after the attack, although police on the scene said his injuries were neither life-threatening nor life-changing.

Police said they had arrested a man in connection with the stabbing.

Police sealed off the junction between the high street and Longfellow Road and parked a patrol car over a pool of blood, the end point of what police described as a 10m trail of blood.

One eye witness, who did not want to be named, said there was a fight between four or five Turkish looking men along the high street near Iceland and Waitrose, and one man was stabbed.

Longfellow Road resident Gary Humphrey, 37, saw the aftermath of the stabbing after a shopping trip to Waitrose.

He said: "He was lying on the floor and an ambulance was coming. He was lying there with all his family there with him and quite a lot of blood.

"The police and ambulance were here really quickly. He was really quiet but he was conscious. The paramedics had just arrived and about three of his brothers, wife and three sons were around.

"It's not what you expect here. We have lived here three years and have never seen anything like this before."
