FIREFIGHTERS are warning residents to be vigilant against grass fires after a blaze triggered railway chaos.

Around 20 firefighters were called to a railway bank in Springbank Road, Hither Green, on Monday at 11.30pm after a resident spotted flames.

The fire was under control after 45 minutes but caused disruption to early morning services to and from London Bridge.

London Fire Brigade Borough Commander for Lewisham, Lee King, says there have been 42 grass fires in Lewisham this year, and that discarded cigarettes are the most common cause.

He added: "It’s extremely frustrating for the fire service because these fires are easily preventable.

"If you’re disposing of a cigarette or barbeque, please do so carefully. In this hot weather a small spark can spread like wildfire and cause devastation.

“Please don’t throw cigarettes out of car windows, they can easily cause fires on grass verges – you’d be amazed how quickly these fires can spread.”

Two weeks ago, 20 firefighters in Kingston spent around 18 hours extinguishing a grass fire which was thought to have been caused by a dropped cigarette.

The cause of the Hither Green fire is under investigation.
