A GLAMOROUS Milan-inspired fashion show, Bollywood dancers and a wild funfair were among the array of attractions at Oaklands College Summer Fayre today.

The event at the college's Smallford campus, in Hatfield Road, saw a record turn out, with about 4,000 people flocking to enjoy the variety of arts and craft stalls, activities and entertainment.

It was also a rare opportunity for Oaklands College students to demonstrate their talents to the general public.

A delicious selection of home made cakes and jams baked by hospitality and catering students were quickly snapped up by visitors as they went on sale.

And many of the female guests left today's event with polished hands after beauty students put their manicure skills into practice.

Meanwhile, second year fashion pupils staged a fashion parade, showcasing a variety of wacky and wonderful collections.

Models paraded down the catwalk in costumes they have been designing and preparing for a final project, prompting gasps of admiration from the audience.

College spokesman Sean Scully said: "Today is fantastic because it gives the college and different departments a chance to show the general public what they do - it also brings lots of people to the college.

"We get lots of exhibitors to come along and show all the crafts that they are selling. It's a great family day out and we are lucky that we have such beautiful surroundings. It's nice to be able to use it to give the local community a good time.

"Also a massive thank you to our sponsors Debenhams Ottaway for making this happen."

Highlights also included a dog agility display, an Arsenal Ladies Academy and basketball girls tug of war, a live perfomance of Westside story songs and army tank rides.

Director of St Albans Chamber of Commerce Jonathan Shreeves, his wife Sarah and daughters Katie, 12, and Isobel, five, were among the many families enjoying the delights of the fete, including the kid's play bus and fairground rides.

He said: "It seems to get bigger every year - we have had a fantastic time.

"There's a really nice atmosphere and there's something for everyone. There's a lot of fun things for the children to do and it's all about being part of the community."
