Motor racing returned to Crystal Palace last weekend as cars roared around the track once tackled by the greatest Formula One drivers in the world.

Historic racing cars from as far back as 1903 took part in the first motorsport event in a decade in Crystal Palace Park on Sunday and Monday.

The Sevenoaks and District Motor Club put on a sprint event, where car enthusiasts from across the UK fought to find the fastest lap around a 700m track incorporating many of the famous bends of a circuit that once hosted Formula One's London Grand Prix.

Event organiser Colin Billings said: "It’s fantastic to be back here. Crystal Palace lays claim to be the oldest purpose built motor racing circuit in the country.

"It has such a history here and saw the true greats from the 50s, 60s and 70s race here."

Thousands of spectators flocked to Crystal Palace Park for the event, which saw 200 competitors competing in the time trials, across categories split up by the era of car.

Classic cars lined up alongside hybrid and electric cars predicted to be the future of motoring.

Cars clocked speeds of up to 90mph, with the fastest time of the weekend 35.18 seconds.

Mr Billings said the event was a real success and a clear demonstration the park’s history could also be its future.

The 10 year break from the last event followed concerns car racing was damaging roads around the park.
