CUSTOMERS at a sandwich shop narrowly escaped serious injury when two cars crashed into the shop window.

A Vauxhall Corsa and a Mercedes with a Polish licence plate swerved to avoid a head-on collision and crashed into Subway in Fore Street, Upper Edmonton, at 10.49am on Friday.

It is believed one of cars was speeding down the main road when the driver swerved to avoid the other car, approaching from a side street.

Subway shop owner Avinash Gogna, 48, said: "No one was injured, it was a very, very lucky escape.

"People who had passed by a few seconds before could have been hit, it could have been a big disaster. It's a busy road."

"There were a few customers in the store, they were shocked, badly shocked. If it had been one o'clock it could have been a lot worse. Thank God no one was injured."

Police cordoned off the area and the drivers and shop owner exchanged details but no arrests were made.

The fire brigade were also called as a precaution as smoke was seen coming from one of the cars. The Subway shop was closed for a day as repairs were carried out.
