A POPULAR park has been handed a Lottery grant of more than £900,000.

The Heritage Lottery Fund and the Big Lottery Fund has announced more than £9m is being ploughed into open spaces in London as part of their Parks for People scheme.

Horniman Gardens in Horniman Drive, Lewisham, was awarded £907,000 meaning its historic bandstand terrace can now be restored.

Director of the Horniman Museum and Gardens, Janet Vitmayer, said: "We’re thrilled to have the go-ahead for our redevelopment scheme which will realise Frederick Horniman’s original dream of a truly united museum and gardens.

"The museum’s collections will be reflected within the gardens through new planting and interpretation including a world food garden, musical play area, and a space for community and learning activities."
