Police are investigating claims that a bus driver attacked and drove into a woman following a rush-hour argument.

Gloria Young, 21, says she got into an argument with the driver of the G1 bus in Wickersley Road, Battersea, shortly after 6pm on Friday, November 19, after he wouldn't let her off at her requested stop.

She says that as she got off the bus during the row, her friend's hand became trapped in the door so she asked for his identification number to report him.

She says he refused, so she snatched it off him, claiming he threatened her with violence and verbally abused her.

Miss Young says he then punched her. Although she admits fighting back to defend herself, she claims she and the driver fell off the bus, after which she stood in front of the vehicle to detain it for police.

Miss Young said the driver started to manoeuvre the bus to move her out of the way. When she refused, she says he drove into her. She alleges the driver then reversed his bus and drove off. She said: "I was being dragged along. I couldn't walk and I'm still on crutches."

Police were called to reports of an argument on the bus between a passenger and the bus driver. A 44-year-old man was arrested at the Battersea bus depot, Silverthorne Road, at 10.10pm on suspicion of GBH and failing to stop at the scene of a personal injury accident. He was bailed to return on January 10.

Miss Young was taken to Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and treated for bruising, grazing and a strained thigh.

A spokesman for Travel London, which runs the G1 bus route, said: "A driver has been suspended pending a hearing of a disciplinary procedure and we are currently co-operating with the Metropolitan Police."
