A 12-year-old girl left fighting for her life after a hit-and-run accident is up and walking having made such an amazing recovery some have dubbed her the "Morden miracle".

Jodie Duffin, a pupil at Glenthorne High School in Sutton, has made remarkable progress since the accident in Morden on June 19 when she was hit after stepping off a bus in Tudor Drive.

Despite initially being in a critical condition, Jodie has astounded doctors at St George's Hospital in Tooting.

Her relieved parents, Bob and Amanda Duffin, have spoken of their gratitude towards doctors and nurses at St George's and the many well-wishers who sent messages.

They said in a statement: "We would like to thank the hospital and staff and everyone who has sent cards.

"They really helped us through."

Jodie's recovery is considered miraculous considering it was just one month ago that a photo was released at her parents request showing Jodie unconscious and hooked up to a ventilator.

Jodie's headteacher Steve Hume said: "We are delighted and very surprised.

"I went to see her about 10 days ago and already we were amazed she was sitting up talking and walking around.

"But since then she has been home for a couple of hours and now there is talk about when she can go home for good.

"She came very close to death and I know some of the doctors have referred to her as the "Morden miracle".

"At the end of term it is a fantastic pick-me-up for the whole school.

"She still cannot remember the accident at all but we are looking forward to seeing her back some time in the Autumn term."

Doctors at St George's have now been able to move Jodie on to a normal ward.

Police have arrested a 31-year-old man in connection with the accident, who has been bailed to return to a south London police station on September 6.
