POLICE are appealing for witnesses after an 89-year-old woman was robbed.
The victim was approached by a man in Lawrie Park Gardens, Sydenham, at 4.20pm on Friday (January 15).
He grabbed her handbag and knocked her to the ground before running off.
Around 10 minutes later the pensioner was found by a woman who lives nearby and the police were called.
Officers from Lewisham police and paramedics arrived and the woman was taken to a south London hospital with serious injuries. She remains in hospital today.
Investigating officer Trainee Detective Constable Sue Riggs said: “This is an extremely unusual and upsetting incident. It has had a devastating effect on the victim, who is a vulnerable and elderly woman.
“We are keen to trace a man dressed in grey clothing who ran away from the area at approximately 4.30pm.
“If anyone saw or heard anything around Lawrie Park Gardens on Friday afternoon please contact Lewisham CID.”
The victim had a distinctive black handbag, with handles rather than straps and three zip pockets.
About £120 in cash, a new passport and house keys were stolen along with the bag.
Anyone with information should call Lewisham CID on 020 8284 8414 or 07788 916 864, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
