AN ISLAMIST group has scrapped its plans for a controversial protest in Wootton Bassett.

Radical organisation Islam4UK was planning to demonstrate in the Wiltshire town which is famous for honouring British servicemen and women killed abroad.

The planned march, which it is understood would have featured coffins to represent the Muslims killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, had been condemned by politicians and veterans’ groups.

But the group’s leader, cleric Anjem Choudary has now decided to scrap the controversial protest.

He said: “We at Islam4UK have decided, after consultation with others including our Sheikh Omar Bakri Muhammad, that no more could be achieved even if a procession were to take place in Wootton Bassett.”

Mr Choudary’s decision comes days after a Waltham Forest group pledged support for a demonstration.

Abu Nusaybah, a spokesman for Waltham Forest Muslims said there was “widespread support” for the demonstration in the borough.

But Cllr Afzal Akram, a Muslim and council cabinet member for community safety, had described Islam4Uk’s planned demo as “deplorable” and “insensitive”.

He said: “They are a few radicals looking for their five minutes of fame.”
