Enfield NHS issues warming advice as frost arrives

NHS Enfield has issued a series of toasty tips advising residents how to stay healthy as the cold weather approaches.

It is supporting the Department of Health’s annual "Keep Warm, Keep Well" campaign, which aims to prevent unnecessary illness and death during the winter months.

Dr Shahed Ahmad, director of public health at NHS Enfield, said: “Cold weather brings risks to vulnerable people across society, including older people and people with long-term medical conditions.

"It is vital people look after themselves and stay warm and healthy over the winter months.

"We’re not just asking people to look after themselves, but also to look out for vulnerable people they know who might need their help to stay warm this winter.”

Tips from NHS Enfield on how to remain healthy include:

  • Wear several thinner layers of clothing rather than one or two thick layers of clothing.
  • Wear long-sleeved and thermal underwear.
  • Wear a thin silky scarf or handkerchief inside the collar.
  • Take care to dress for the weather outside and wrap up warmly.
  • Wear a hat or headscarf outside.
  • Wear warm, dry, flat boots or shoes with non slip soles.
  • Eat a well balanced diet.
  • Try to keep as active as possible, from walking to the shops to dusting and cleaning.
  • Avoid sitting down for long periods of time. If you have difficulty walking, moving your arms and legs or wiggling your fingers and toes will help.
  • Give up smoking with help from www.quitsmoking.uk.com.
  • Get a flu jab, recommended for anyone aged 65 or over, people with serious heart disease, serious respiratory disease, serious renal disease or diabetes.
