STONE: New pavilion will have 'top class facilities'

PLANS to build a new “top-class” pavilion in Stone are a step closer after a planning application was submitted.

Stone Parish Council is applying for permission to build a large £500,000 extension to the community hall at the recreation ground in London Road.

It will provide more space and improved facilities and also includes environmentally-friendly features such as solar panels, low-energy lighting and a system to harness rainwater to irrigate sports pitches.

Parish council chairman Councillor Thurza Richards said: “This is very exciting progress.

“We are one step nearer our dream of realising top-class facilities for residents of Stone.

“We have a high demand for services and this will only increase as the parish grows.

“We must ensure that we are prepared for expansion and that we have facilities which allow the development of local clubs and organisations to meet the needs of local people.”

The existing cricket pavilion, which was built in the 1950s, will be demolished.

Also part of the plans are new changing rooms and showers, in line with Sport England guidelines, which the council hopes will allow Stone Cricket Club to expand and attract more players, including a women’s team.

Nigel Southam, secretary of the cricket club, said: “This is excellent news.

“The club are looking forward to utilizing the new facility, and the development of Stone Cricket Club into a positive resource for local residents.

“The club hopes to realise dreams of establishing a junior team and even a women’s team if interest is shown.

“Should the planning application be successful, the club will be assured of a bright future.”

Parish council staff will also be moved to the new building allowing St Mary’s Pre-school to move into the existing council offices, which have been renovated.

Dartford Council is expected to make a decision on the planning application in January with building work scheduled to be completed by October.
