A youth club project launched in response to concerns expressed by local people about the lack of youth work in the village has proved a “resounding success”.
The new Abbots Langley youth club, established by Youth Connexions and Hertfordshire and St Lawrence Church, has drawn support from all sectors of the community.
Having opened on Guy Fawkes Night in the newly refurbished Abbots Langley Community Centre, teenagers were able to take part in some creative and ice-breaking activities, as well as meet staff and check out the building.
Reverend Margaret Davis, assistance curate at St Lawrence Church, said: “Building on the Guy Fawkes opening, teenagers were able to enjoy pizza-making and indoor hockey.
“The young people of Abbots Langley have now, for the first time in several years, an indoor youth project to give them exciting and constructive activities and opportunities.”
Partially funded by grants from Three Rivers District Council and Hertfordshire County Council, future activities include floodlit football, all-night ice skating, cookie baking, glass painting and a Wii night. Pool and table tennis is also available every week.
Wendy Beaumont, churchwarden for Abbots Langley, said: “There are a lot of young people at a loose end, sometimes getting up to mischief because they have nowhere to go.
“It is hoped this community project will help to build bridges between the generations in the village.”
Young people aged between 13 and 19 are welcomed between 7pm and 10pm, on Thursday nights, at the Community Centre, Gallows Hill Lane, Abbots Langley. Admission is 50p.
